The Day of Reckoning is here. On the second Saturday of every month something special happens. On that day, writers and teachers, students and pupils, gather for a day of intense study and story critique. Seven hours. Seven instructors. Seven different topics.

Day of Reckoning is a one-day Skype session of seven classes that runs from 9-12 AM and then 1-5 PM CST. The sessions last for 45 minutes with a 15 minute break in-between (and an hour for lunch). Each month brings a different mix of instructors and classes. Richard Thomas will be moderating.

Find the topics, authors, and day that works best for you, and then study with authors, editors, and teachers that are publishing in elite publications, with the top presses, getting nominated for (and winning) major awards, and landing in the “best of the year” anthologies.

And on top of that, you get to submit 1-8 stories to these talented authors (including Richard) to get their feedback. It’s like a private session with the top publications, the ones that rarely give you feedback unless they accept your work. Why didn’t you make it in? Where did you fall short? What’s working? You’ll find out, which will help you to edit and tweak your work, giving you a better chance at acceptance the next time you send these stories out.

who is this class for?

  1. Any writer who has 1-8 stories that need feedback (ideally done, not rough drafts).

  2. Advanced authors looking to expand their skill set.

  3. Brave new authors looking to hone their craft.

  4. Authors that write across genre—speculative and lit; realism and the supernatural.

  5. Authors who don’t have time for a longer class.

  6. Authors looking for professional feedback.

cost

$350 per student, total. There are no additional discounts for past students or for paying in full, since we have set rates for the instructors. It’s on a first come, first serve basis. To sign up or get more information, see the monthly classes below.

Prerequisites

  1. At least one short story (5,000 word limit) to turn in for critique. Stories will be turned in before the class and will receive their feedback in the next 30 days.

  2. A Saturday free to devote to the class.

  3. Since the class takes place over Skype the student will need a decent internet connection.
