cLass progression

Our writing classes are designed to engage students at their skill level and then challenge and support them through their growth as writers.

Most of the classes don’t have prerequisites, but they are formulated to progress in a meaningful way, leading the student systematically from beginner to advanced.

If you’re a beginning writer or just need a refresher on the fundamentals, and because learning the fundamentals of fiction is easier when the scope is smaller, we recommend students begin with Short Story Mechanics.

A beginning student’s class progression might look like this:

  • Short Story Mechanics (LitReactor) Beginner (or At Your Own Pace, offered here)

  • Contemporary Dark Fiction Intermediate

  • Advanced Creative Writing Workshop Advanced

  • Novel Workshop 365 Advanced

  • Flash Fiction (LitReactor) Intermediate/Niche

Classes that are not self-paced are taught in one of two formats.

Both Short Story Mechanics and Flash Fiction take place over on LitReactor where the classes are taught via forums. While there are assignments that have to be turned in on deadline, there is no scheduled time to meet.

Contemporary Dark Fiction, Advanced Creative Writing Workshop, and Novel Workshop 365 take place via Skype with Richard and your classmates. With Skype classes there is also a private Facebook group where discussion takes place between class meetings.
